Happy San Pedro Day!

Posted: Tuesday, June 29, 2021. 10:23 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: Today is being observed as San Pedro Day on San Pedro Ambergris Caye. The day is commemorated to celebrate that date in 1847 when the first group of families fled the Caste war in Yucatan and made San Pedro their home.

Every year, the town celebrates this day with parades, educational tours on the island’s history, and more.

This year, the San Pedro Town Council is celebrating by serving early morning breakfast to fishermen and guides.

“As we look back at our history we recognize that we are not a small fishing settlement but one of the leading touristic destinations in our jewel, Belize. We remember the vision of our forefathers and we commend the ingenuity of the children born from the ‘San Pedro Dream.’ There is no San Pedro without the inclusion of our diverse community of residents. Those who have dedicated their lives to the development and growth of our island; the entrepreneurs, the risk-takers, the resilient and determined residents that contribute positively to San Pedro,” a statement from the council said.

The council called on all islanders to remember the history of why San Pedro is called home.

“We would like to thank the San Pedro Catholic Church for keeping the tradition of San Pedro day alive. We were honored to collaborate with the working committees to make this day a special one. Long live San Pedro,” the council added.

Happy San Pedro Day!
