Mass COVID-19 testing conducted at Philip Goldson International Airport after infections confirmed among immigration staff

Posted: Tuesday, June 29, 2021. 10:26 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) has tested over 100 staff members from different departments of the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA) for COVID-19 after it was confirmed that several staff members from the Immigration Department tested positive.

Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat told the media that the situation represents the first cluster of cases reported at any port of entry since the virus was first detected in Belize back in March 2020. He stressed that the Ministry is going through all the procedures associated with detecting a positive case; however, it is difficult to identify the index case because of the level of movement going through the PGIA, particularly through immigration.

“There are twelve of the seventeen immigration officers tested positive over the weekend at the P.G.I.A. Since then, there has been an additional, I believe, it is a hundred and twenty-two persons who work at the P.G.I.A. have been tested and they are all negative so far.”

Yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, and Immigration said that staff from the Immigration Department who have experience working at the airport have begun substituting, in an effort to continue service at the PGIA.
