By Rubén Morales Iglesias: When everyone thought the match would be determined by penalty kicks, Ukraine shocked Sweden at Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland, qualifying to the EURO 2020 quarterfinals.
With time expiring Oleksandr Zinchenko, later named Man of the Match, crosses the ball into the box and Artem Dovbyk heads it home in dramatic fashion in the 120’ + 1’ knocking out Sweden 2-1.
Ukraine hit first on a superb blast by Zinchenko in the 27’ but Emil Forsberg responded with a long shot which rebounded off a defender and beat the Ukraine keeper Georgiy Bushchan in the 43’ to level the score at 1-1 before the half.
The second half and overtime saw advances from both sides but to no avail. Forsberg could have given Sweden the lead at least twice, but his shots banged on the post and crossbar.
Sweden were short-changed when central defender Marcus Danielson was red-carded in the 98’.
In the end, Dovbyk’ spectacular header unlocked the game in Ukraine’s favour.
Now they go on to the quarterfinals where they will face England who earlier today put Germany away 2-0.
That’s the first time Ukraine reach this far in the EURO though in 2006 they did reach the quarterfinals in the FIFA World Cup but lost 3-0 to Italy.
The quarterfinals kick off Friday with Switzerland against Spain and Belgium facing Italy.
On Saturday, the Czech Republic match up against Denmark before Ukraine challenge England.
