By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The exportation of cattle to Mexico was delayed until Thursday because the inspection is taking longer than expected.

Approximately 500 head of cattle to Mexico had to be inspected both at Shipyard and Blue Creek by a Mexican veterinarian sent by SENASICA, the Mexican animal health authority.

The inspection is thorough and is taking three days instead of the two initially expected by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).

Principal Agriculture Officer Belarmino Esquivel said 367 of the 408 head of cattle at Shipyard were approved by the SENASICA veterinarian.

Esquivel further said that on Wednesday the Mexican vet would inspect the final 88 head of cattle in Blue Creek.

The approved cattle will then be exported on Thursday.

Esquivel said he considers that at least 70 of the remaining 88 head of cattle will be approved for export, which would put the number at approximately the 450 MAFSE had expected would be approved.

Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE), Jose Abelardo Mai will be on hand on Thursday at Shipyard for the exportation. He will be accompanied by representatives from BAHA, OIRSA, the Belize Livestock Producers Association (BLPA), and MAFSE.

Up to now over 20,000 head of cattle valued at nearly $30 million have been exported to Guatemala and Mexico.
