By Rubén Morales Iglesias: San Pedro’s King Lion 51-mile Run starting on Thursday and Seine Bight Young Runners for Life 5K on Saturday fire off six running events coming up in July.

Ian ‘Lionman’ Gordon is doing a four-day 51-mile run to raise funds to construct a new house and advertising the Lobster Fest which starts on Thursday, July 1, in San Pedro and finishes on Sunday, July 4.

Gordon said for Day One, he’ll run around the Southside of San Pedro from the DFC area, cross the bridge and head to Caribbean Villas where the Lobster Fest Crawl will be on.

The second event is the Young Runners for Life 5K race organized by the Seine Bight Runners Club in the southern part of the country on Saturday, July 2. According to Wanda Stakutis, registration begins at 6:30 am and the race at 7:30 am. Participation is free and is open to all youth 7-18. Prizes will be awarded for best in the different categories.

Stakutis has had the members of the Seine Bight Runners Club training for Saturday’s race.

Then on Sunday, July 4 there is the Belize Audubon Society’s Trailblazer 5K at St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park. The race starts at 6:30 am at the Blue Hole National Park Visitor Centre which is 12 miles south of Belmopan on the Hummingbird Highway. The route will follow the Jungle and Lowland Trails passing by the St Herman’s Cave.

Awards will be given to the top three in the men’s and women’s categories. Plus, all participants will be entered into a prize draw “to win $100 cash, an overnight stay for two at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, cave tubing experience for two at St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park and one year’s Family Membership of Belize Audubon Society.”

Two weeks later, there’s the 10K Benque Run in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Saturday, July 17. Ricardo Salazar of totaltimebz.com said the race is not yet confirmed but that it would be 10K to be hosted by the Benque Viejo Town Council.

The following day, Sunday, July 18, the Summer in Orange Walk 10K will be held in Orange Walk Town. The race starts at 5:30 am at the Orange Walk Multipurpose Complex Building. Runners can sign up at totaltimebz.com. Registration closes on Friday, July 16. Entry is $20.

And, to close off July, the Wellness Ambassadors are having another event in their Diabetes Awareness Run Series on July 31.
