Trade: Import flows back to normal, exports rise

Posted: Wednesday, June 30, 2021. 11:21 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Import flows are back to near-normal levels, according to the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

Meanwhile, exports are up about 15 percent, with rebounds for sugar and the addition of animal feed and livestock countering slower growth for marine products and bananas and reductions in citrus products and red kidney beans.

Belize imported $760 million worth of goods in the first five months of 2021, an increase of 70 million from last year, where there were historic lows in import flows due to COVID-19.

Belize exported $172 million of goods as described above.

Belize’s biggest buyers are the European Union and United Kingdom for sugar, and Central America and the United States for animal feed.
