By Aaron Humes: The Government has announced the first meeting of the newly constituted Joint Public Accounts Committee (JPAC), a Standing Committee of the House of Representatives, which took place on Wednesday afternoon in the Committee Room of the National Assembly building in Belmopan.

Membership consists of, from the House, chairman Tracy Panton and Hugo Patt from the Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP); Julius Espat, Kareem Musa, Dolores Balderamos-Garcia and Kevin Bernard from the governing People’s United Party (PUP); and Senators Kevin Herrera (Business), Elena Smith (Trade Unions and Civil Society) and Osmany Salas (Non-Governmental Organizations).

The remit of the JPAC is to review the national finances to ensure good governance, accountability and transparency. Several of its members including Espat are holdovers from previous iterations of the Committee.

Panton wrote afterward on social media, “I am both privileged and humbled to be elected to serve as the Chair of this important oversight committee.”

Espat added, “Fulfilling our Good Governance agenda. First historic meeting of the new Bi-cameral Public Accounts Committee. We welcome our social partner senators. All the best to our new chairperson Hon. Tracy Panton.  Let the work begin!”
