United States issues level two travel advisory for visiting Belize

Posted: Thursday, July 1, 2021. 2:18 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Today the United States issued a Level Two Travel Advisory for Belize, urging US citizens preparing to or contemplating travelling to Belize to “Exercise Increased Caution” due to crime and COVID-19.

With respect to COVID-19, the Level 2 Health Notice says that there are relatively low levels of the virus in Belize and that travelers will have further decreased risk if they are fully vaccinated.

Regarding crime and violence, the advisory warned that violent crime such as sexual assault, home invasions, armed robberies, and murder, are common even during daylight hours and in tourist areas. The advisory warns that a “significant portion of violent crime is gang related,” and that local police lack the necessary resources to address the crime situation, leaving most crimes unsolved. US Citizens were also told specifically areas that they should avoid when coming to Belize.

“Reconsider Travel U.S. citizens should avoid traveling to Belize City. Historically much of the violent crime in Belize occurs in the Southside of Belize City and is gang related. This area (south of Haulover Creek Canal and continuing south to Fabers Road) does not overlap the typical tourism,” the advisory said.

US travelers are also urged to exercise extra vigilance when visiting banks and ATMs and refrain from resisting if they are getting robbed.
