Minister of Agriculture says Mexican SuKarne penetrating the US, Canada markets with Belizean beef

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Though the exportation of Belizean cattle to Mexico was being delayed by Mexican red-tape at the border on Thursday, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise Jose Abelardo Mai, on hand at Shipyard, said he was satisfied that the Mexican buyers are happy with the Belizean beef.

“The important thing is that SuKarne seems to have penetrated the US market with our beef and is seeking to penetrate the Canadian market with our beef,” said Minister Mai at Shipyard on Thursday as he was working in the processing of the cattle exportation with his staff, exporter John Wall, and representatives from Mexican multinational SuKarne, the company buying the Belizean cattle.

With Friday’s 434 head of cattle exported to Mexico, Belize has now exported more than 20,000 head of cattle to Mexico and Guatemala over the last eight months according to Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) sources.

“Our quality seems to be very well accepted by the marketers in the US and Canada, so I think it’s a good step in the right direction for Belizean producers,” said Mai.

The Mexican representatives from SuKarne said they like doing business with the Belizean livestock producers. Prior to buying from Wall at Shipyard, they have been buying cattle from Blue Creek since September. This time around SuKarne bought 85 head of cattle from Blue Creek.

“They like the work we put in,” Mai said. “They like the determination the farmers have. They like the drive that they see in the Belizean livestock producer to want to export and to have the best quality available.”

“If there is something we have seen and that we have applauded about the people of Belize it’s the eagerness to keep going forward, of improving,” said Pedro Julio Jauregui Ortiz, SuKarne’s Chief of Cattle Buying Centers in the South of Mexico.

“I’ve noticed that they are very focused on getting specimens of very good quality, through in vitro insemination, artificial insemination, better breeds with European crosses that produce better marble in the beef. That shows that the people here are very serious, very committed with the market, with the cattle sector.”

Jauregui said SuKarne has given the go-ahead for Belizean exporters to participate in their cattle for studs exchange. The Belizean exporter would just have to visit the Sukarne seedstock farms, identify the seedstock they want and when SuKarne comes to Belize to buy cattle they bring the selected breeders and the Belizean exporter pays for them with commercial cattle.
