Spain defeat Switzerland in penalty kicks, qualify for the Euro 2020 semifinals

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Spain edged Switzerland 3-1 in penalty kicks after 120 minutes that saw both teams locked at 1-1.

The nerve-racking penalty kick shootout sent Spain to the Euro 2020 semifinals.

Spain hit first off a shot by Jordi Alba which deflected Denis Zakaria in the 8th minute.

Spain seemed to be in the driver’s seat but in the 68th Xherdan Shaqiri pounced on a defensive mishap by the Spanish defensive to tie the match at 1-1.

To complicate matters for the Swiss, Remo Freuler was red-carded in the 77th for a hard tackle, but somehow the Swiss kept the game level all the way through extra-time forcing penalty kicks.

Spain’s captain Sergio Busquets hit the left post on their first kick, but thereafter the Swiss only converted one before Mikel Oyarzábal gave Spain the semifinals ticket.
