Tennis returns with men’s doubles tournament

By Aaron Humes: The sport of tennis has resumed competitive play with a men’s doubles tournament sponsored by James Brodie and Company and RF&G Insurance at the Pickwick Club, Newtown Barracks, Belize City, last weekend.

There was no corresponding women’s tournament, organizers said, due to not having enough participants, but 11 doubles teams of men participated in a round robin.

Two groups of five and six teams respectively played each other in a single regular set, with the top two from each group advancing to the semi-final.

Defending champions Mike and Stefan Sosa (father and son) were joined by Blake Lee and Ralph Tatum; Peter Quan and Harnadar Tut; and Richard Huang and Samron Pott.

Sosa/Sosa defeated Huang/Pott in the first semi-final by 8 games to 4 in a fast and exciting match, with the winners showing a strong net game. Lee/Tatum defeated Quan/Tut by 8 to 2 in the other semi-final.

The final was best-of-three between Sosa/Sosa and Lee/Tatum. The defending champions prevailed 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 for their third straight title excluding 2020 when the tournament was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There was no in-person audience due to COVID regulations.

The winners were awarded trophies and cash by James Brodie & Co. Ltd.’s CEO, Edward Musa, Sr. and RF&G Insurance Operations Manager, Andrew Roe.
