By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize is to send nine athletes to the NACAC U18, U20, U23 Athletics Championship this weekend in Costa Rica.

The North, Central America and Caribbean Championship is to be held from July 9-11 at the National Stadium in San José, Costa Rica.

Earlier, Belize Athletics Association (BAA) president Deon Sutherland said the BAA was hoping to get sponsorship from the National Olympic Committee.

Sutherland said the BAA was looking at six U-23 athletes plus three from U18 Category.

“The U-23 are Ashantie Car doing long jump and triple jump, and Ashontie Carr 400m and 800m, Hilary Gladden 100m and 200m,” said Sutherland.

“Linden Wade doing the 400m, Gary Neal he will be doing the 200m and 400m, and Kerwin Palacio for long and triple jumps.”

Sutherland said the BAA is sending three U18 athletes in preparation for World U-20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, which comes up in December.

“Mia Sylvester being one of our greatest prospects in terms of shotput. We feel that she has a very good future in shotput and at the age of 16 and throwing almost 14 meters, we believe that she will do a whole lot in terms of that event,” Sutherland said.

“We also have Glenford Williams. He is good in the 100m and the 100m hurdles.”

“Then, there’s Kirk Erlington. He is doing a very good job in the triple and long jumps.”
