By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Tax Service Department (BTSD) issued a warning to those owing taxes to the Government of Belize that their identities will be made public knowledge as early as next month if they are not forthcoming with payments.
The Director-General of the (BTSD) explained that the Tax Administration and Procedure (Amendment) Bill, 2021 has empowered the department to publish the names of all income, business, and general sales tax defaulters in the Government Gazette, in a newspaper of general circulation in Belize and on the Department’s website.
“In anticipation of the Bill becoming law, the Department hereby encourages all tax defaulters who do not want their names to be published to visit the Department’s nearest office in the month of July 2021 to make arrangements to pay all tax arrears. In August 2021, the Department will begin to publish the names of tax defaulters and to take other reasonable steps to collect tax arrears,” the department said.
The decision to pass the amendment forms a part of the Government of Belize’s home-grown economic plan, which not only seeks to reduce expenditures but aggressively seeks lost revenue from defaulters.
