Cabinet approves major tourism incentives

Posted: Wednesday, July 7, 2021. 8:24 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The tourism industry is getting significant boosts with the Cabinet’s approval of incentives for the island of Caye Chapel and in the Commercial Free Zone, Corozal.

On the island of Caye Chapel, the owner of Caye Chapel Company Limited has been approved for a Four Seasons luxury resort, with a 100-room hotel, spas, golf course, restaurant, marina, and airstrip, immediately south of Caye Caulker. Some 600 Belizeans are expected to have short-term construction and long-term employment. The $100-million-plus investment is expected to yield revenues of more than $125 million annually over the next five years.

Meanwhile, up North, an entertainment and recreation park is to be built in the area near the casinos within the Free Zone, in the Designated Processing Area (DPA). The area will eventually be transitioned into a Special Entertainment and Recreation Zone for the development of potential tourism.

In other news, there was an update from Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat on an accelerated vaccine campaign. Some 12,340 doses have been issued countrywide since a week ago today, Wednesday. The number of first-time vaccines is past 93 thousand as of Monday and fully vaccinated persons past 34 thousand. However, the villages of Barranco, Conejo, and Midway have been locked down since Friday to tamp down the number of rising cases. Villagers have been getting food hampers and stipends as promised by the Minister.

Cabinet was briefed by Samantha Matute-Tucker, Assistant Solicitor General, in relation to the undertaking of the Government to adopt affirmative measures, in consultation with the Maya people or their representatives, to identify and protect the rights of the Maya customary laws and land tenure.

Also off traveling starting Thursday is Jose Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise, who is taking a short hop over the border to Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico to hold talks on trade and agriculture with his Mexican counterparts.
