By BBN Staff: A Honduran woman who was taken to court on charges of handling stolen goods has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison due to her immigration status.

Brenda Nohemy Madrid Garcia, 37, appeared this morning before Magistrate Albert Hoare at courtroom number 8, which is handling Belize City cases since the main building of the Magistrate’s Court is closed due to a COVID-19 infection among the staff.

She was read two counts of handling stolen goods with respect to a number of stolen tools which had a total value of over $1,100.

She initially pleaded guilty, but when asked if she knew the items were stolen, she said “no” causing the magistrate to enter a plea of not guilty for her.

While they spoke, Hoare inquired about her immigration status and she confessed that she was living in Belize illegally. Hoare then remanded her to the Belize Central Prison, as she is a flight risk if let out on bail.

She is scheduled to return to court on July 28.
