By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Human Development today hosted the press at the Princess Royal Youth Hostel on the George Price Highway.
The facility has undergone a physical transformation since the first visit about four months ago; what follows next is a mental transformation.
So in addition to painting, replacement of furniture and staff, there are new programs and a new outlook.
Too often, frustrated families see the Hostel as a last resort for wayward and delinquent youths. Now, says Minister Dolores Balderamos Garcia, it will be the first step on a path to rehabilitation.
Along with a name change will be legislation regulating its status as a “certified institution,” toughening orders to indefinitely detain youths up to the age of 18. Cases will now be regularly reviewed and the Ministry plans to set up residential homes for graduates to be reintroduced to society and able to function as adults.
A place like this, said Garcia, is nowhere to grow up. But for the score of youngsters who must, they will be able to emerge healed, revitalized and ready to face the world on their own, but with the support of society and not its scorn.
