By Aaron Humes: Permanent Representative of Belize to the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Lynn Raymond Young, presented his credentials today to the Secretary-General of the OAS, Luis Almagro.
Secretary Almagro paid tribute to Belize’s good relations with the body, stating, “Belize has always played a very important role in the OAS. Your country represents both the Caribbean and Central America, which provides you with a privileged vision of the region.” He also noted that Belize contributed diplomat Assistant Secretary-General of the Organization, Nestor Mendez.
Young said Belize shares the same values of the OAS, regarding the promotion of democracy, the strengthening of peace and security, the fight against poverty and the promotion of sustainable development. “I take this opportunity to emphasize Belize’s continued commitment to all the principles enshrined in the OAS Charter,” the Belizean diplomat said.
Belize has been a member state of the OAS since 1991. It is perhaps best known here for its active role in mediating the Belize-Guatemala territorial dispute and establishing the Adjacency Zone straddling the western boundary between the countries.
