Mexico agrees to assist Belize to develop its agricultural programs

Posted: Friday, July 9, 2021. 3:11 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Government of Mexico has agreed to assist Belize in the development of its agricultural programs.

The announcement by the Press Office of the Government of Belize and a communiqué by the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture follows a bilateral working meeting between the Ministries of Agriculture of both Belize and Mexico in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico, on Thursday, July 8, 2021.

The two delegations were headed by Jose Abelardo Mai, Belize’s Minister of Agriculture and Víctor Manuel Villalobos Arámbula, Mexico’s Secretary of Agriculture.

The Mexican Ministry of Agriculture said the governments of Mexico and Belize agreed to strengthen their technical and scientific cooperation in the areas of health and genetics improvement with the objective of developing the small and medium agricultural, livestock, and aquaculture producers.

The communiqué said Villalobos promised to help Belize in training and exchange of technologies. Mexican technicians will share with their Belizean counterparts, information and technologies to improve the competitiveness and productivity of the Belizean producers. Mexico’s health authority, Senasica, offered Belize the use of its phyto and zoosanitary laboratories to improve and widen Belize diagnostic tests.

Villalobos said the President Andrés Manuel López Obrador gave the instruction that ties with Central American and Caribbean countries should be strengthened. He said in the case of agriculture the objective is to improve the level of cooperation to increase productivity and advance agro-processing systems that are more inclusive and sustainable.

The Belize Press Office said the delegations reached agreements on cooperation “in areas including livestock inspection, importation requirements, surveillance and genetics improvement; technical assistance for small farmers with various cash crops, including soursop, coconut, citrus and soybean; support for training and technical expertise to the Belize Agricultural Health Authority; facilitating agriculture extension personnel in areas such as field research, agro-processing and integrated crop and pest management; sharing of information by both countries on topography, soil mapping and climatology; and technical assistance in aquaculture management practices.”

The Belize Press Office said both Minister Mai and Secretary Villalobos said the event was “a great success.” They plan to have more bilateral meetings to further improve cooperation in agriculture between the two countries.

Minister Mai thanked the Government of Mexico for facilitating the meeting and the assistance Mexico has promised to provide Belize in many different areas.
