By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Mexico’s Secretary of Agriculture has invited Belize’s Minister of Agriculture and the Ministry’s technicians to visit their aquaculture facilities.

This comes after the bilateral meeting in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, between the Mexico Minister of Agriculture and Rural development Dr. Víctor Manuel Villalobos Arámbula and the Belize Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise Jose Abelardo Mai on Thursday.

Apart from several other agreements, Mexico has agreed to help Belize in the aquaculture field.

Secretary Villalobos Arámbula said that due to climate change, Mexico has decided to develop a competitive and sustainable aquaculture and mariculture sector that relies on innovative technologies to allow for the breeding and reproduction of different types of tuna, tilapia, shrimp and octopus. He proposed that Belize technicians visit the Mexican facilities to get to know the methods used by Mexican aquaculture farms.

The Mexican Ministry of Agriculture communiqué in the meeting reported that Minister Mai said that our countries have common interests and problems such that the meeting provided the opportunity to getting to know the methods, experiences and regulations of a power producer and exporter of healthy and secure food products.
