By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize is not attending the NACAC U18, U20, U23 Athletics Championship this weekend in Costa Rica.
The North, Central America and Caribbean Championship starts today, Friday, July 9, and closes on Sunday, July 11, at the National Stadium in San José, Costa Rica.
Earlier, Belize Athletics Association (BAA) president Deon Sutherland said the BAA was hoping to get sponsorship from the National Olympic Committee, but this, reportedly, was not possible.
The BAA had expected to send six U-23 athletes and three U-18.
263 athletes from the entire region are participating in the regional championship.
Hosts Costa Rica lead with 64, Jamaica sent 61 athletes, the Bahamas have 35, Panama 17, Dominican Republic and Guatemala each sent 14, Trinidad & Tobago 10, and Barbados nine.
Other countries participating are Antigua & Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, El Salvador, Grenada, Haiti, Nicaragua, St Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Turks and Caicos Islands, and the US Virgin Islands.
