Argentina wins Copa América 1-0 over Brazil

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Argentina won the Copa America 1-0 on Saturday night over Brazil at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

The lone goal of the final was scored by Angel di María in the 22nd minute lobbing the ball over the Brazil goalkeeper Ederson. Rodrigo de Paul crossed upheld from left to right, di María gets the ball on the run, and with his left foot floats it over goalkeeper Ederson into the net. Argentina 1-0. And that’s the way it was going to end.

This was the first championship for Lionel Messi with Argentina’s A Team. Prior to this Messi had won the Olympics and U-21 World Cup.

When Argentina won the 2008 Beijing Olympics championship over Nigeria a similar goal by di María gave them the gold medal. Di María was voted the Finals MVP. Argentina’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez won the Best Goalkeeper award. Messi was voted the MVP and also won the top goalscorer award.

Argentina last won the Copa América 28 years ago in 1993. This was their 15th title tying with Uruguay as the countries who have won it the most. Colombia won 3rd place 3-2 over Peru on Friday.
