People in Benque Viejo del Carmen accuse Belize police of killing Belizean taken for Guatemalan

Posted: Sunday, July 11, 2021. 5:43 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: On Facebook live streams, people in Benque Viejo del Carmen accuse Belize police of killing a Belizean who was considered to be a Guatemalan.

The body of the man now identified as Edwin Brian Isidro was retrieved dead from the Mopan River in Benque Viejo del Carmen by a number of young men from Benque.

Sources in Benque say while he was a Belizean, Isidro was also Guatemalan but this has not been confirmed.

Reports say that Isidro was reportedly swimming in the Mopan River when he was shot by Belize police.

A person on the scene can be heard speaking in Spanish on a live Facebook stream alleging that the Belize policemen killed the man because he was believed to be a Guatemalan.

Residents alleged that Isidro was shot but BBN understands when his body was brought to the San Ignacio hospital there was no evidence of gunshot injuries. Police later confirmed that two (2) warning shots were indeed fired in the air.

People talking in Spanish in one of the live streams said the police refused to help the man out of the river after he was allegedly shot.

In another Facebook live stream, a woman is heard telling an armed Belize officer that she would not be removed because she was on her family property beside the Mopan River as she was looking on. The officer then approaches other onlookers and verbally threatens them.

The people on the live stream were up in arms about the incident.
