UDP RECALL CONVENTION: Patrick Faber gives thanks, vows “negativity done”

By Aaron Humes: Patrick Faber did not manage to convince everyone, or indeed even a majority, of the delegates who cast ballots today at Birds’ Isle, Belize City.

But when asked, “Do you want the Honourable Patrick Faber to remain as the leader of the UDP [United Democratic Party]? Yes or no?” nearly 47 percent, 226 of 483, said yes and that proved more than enough.

Speaking to reporters afterward with the jubilance of his supporters in the background, Faber seemed both relieved and energized. “I am happy, of course, with the results. I would have hoped for a larger margin, of course, but it’s not just the bare minimum either, you know. Two hundred and twenty-something when you only required one hundred and sixty-odd is indeed very much convincing for me…I think this is a damn good showing, and so I am proud of the results and I am happy to get to continue to be the leader of our great party.”

But Faber also alleged that the “odds were stacked against me, because of the way the delegates were selected originally in some constituencies.” Later, he would say that most of the constituencies elected their executives in 2018 and 2019 and it is now time for them to give way ahead of the Party’s National Convention.

Faber also refused to respond to the direct comments of naysayers such as Edmond Castro who accuse him of neglecting to meet with the party faithful on the ground or their executive leaders at the top: “I am not responding to any negatives anymore. I am going to embrace everybody: for those who want to work with me, my door is open, my arms are open to embrace them once again. … the negativity is done. I won this convention, this recall, so I am now all about embracing those who wish to be embraced; ultimately, those who feel they can’t work with me and they have to move on, that is on them, I don’t want to push that agenda. My agenda now is to embrace those who want to work and want to move the party forward.”
