Israel is now applying third dose of the Pfizer vaccine to increase effectiveness

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Israel is now applying a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine to people with immunological risk and is considering applying it to all its population, according to Spanish newspaper El Independiente.

Israel is the country that has had the fastest vaccination campaign in the world.

Data from the Israel Health Ministry has detected that the Delta variant has been infecting persons who were vaccinated first in January. This could be because the effectiveness of the vaccines might be lowering after six months.

However, Israel health experts have also said that it is too soon to draw conclusions as the sampling is small and that the majority of persons who were vaccinated at the beginning of the vaccination rollout were elderly people who have a weaker immune system.

The data also shows that the vaccine has protected those infected from having severe cases of COVID-19.

Pfizer itself said last week that the company would be seeking authorization from the United States to apply a third dose. Pfizer said that if the third dose is administered 12 months after the previous doses that it would drastically increase its effectiveness.

On Sunday, the Israeli Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz, announced that the third dose of the vaccine can now be given to high-risk adults.

“From now on we will give a third jab to people with immunological risk,” Horowitz said on Israel’s national public television.

Horowitz also said that they are evaluating the possibility of extending the third dose to all of Israel’s population.
