By BBN Staff: A 59-year-old Belizean/American pleaded guilty in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court yesterday for assaulting a police officer who had issued him a ticket for violating COVID-19 protocols.
Carlton Codd is in Belize visiting when on Sunday he was approached by Police Constable Eric Mai.
Mai stopped Codd and informed him that he was committing an offense by not wearing a face mask in public and that he would be ticketed. In response, Codd pushed the officer and the two got into a struggle which ultimately ended in Codd spending a night on lockdown at a police station.
Senior Magistrate, Tricia Pitts- Anderson fined him $400 plus a $5.00 fee of which he was ordered to pay forthwith since he indicated to the court he would be leaving the country soon. Codd managed to pay his fine and was released.
