US President Biden said the United States supports the people of Cuba and Haiti amid unrest in both countries

Posted: Tuesday, July 13, 2021. 5:42 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: United States President Joe Biden on Monday expressed support for the peoples of Cuba and Haiti but did not say anything about intervention though there are now calls particularly from the strong Cuban community in Miami and from the government of Haiti for US intervention.

“The Cuban people are demanding their freedom from an authoritarian regime. I don’t think we’ve seen anything like these protests in a long, long time if, quite frankly, ever,” Biden said to reporters on Monday according to MSN News.

Biden noted the US supports the people of Cuba as they ask for their freedom and called on the government of Cuba not to use violence to muffle the voices of the people.

This came after thousands of protestors across Cuba took to the streets to demand their freedom saying the pandemic and lack of food was killing them.

Biden also expressed the US support for the people of Haiti which is in crisis after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.

“The people of Haiti deserve peace and security and Haiti’s political leaders need to come together for the good of their country,” Biden said.

He added that the US would provide assistance as it becomes necessary.

Haiti has reportedly asked the US to send troops to help Haiti guard critical infrastructure as the crisis continues after last Wednesday’s assassination of President Moïse.

Biden said he would have more to say soon.
