Alcaldes to lead COVID-19 fightback in Toledo

Posted: Wednesday, July 14, 2021. 8:30 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: In response to the spread of COVID-19 in Toledo, with 937 cumulative cases and the now-extended lockdown of three villages, community leaders in the district were hosted from July 9 to 11 by the Maya Leaders Alliance/Toledo Alcaldes Association (MLA/TAA) and the Ministry of Rural Development for a sensitization session on COVID-19 containment measures and on COVID-19 vaccination.

82 alcaldes, village council leaders and others from 33 Toledo villages took part, presented with the right information and support so that they can promote and encourage villagers to follow the safety protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Information on the vaccines and the vaccination strategy of the Government was also provided.

These leaders assured the Ministry of Health that they will pass on all information to their villagers and that they will support the ongoing efforts of the government to deliver vaccination to all adults.

President of the Toledo Alcaldes Association, Domingo Bah, encouraged Alcaldes, Chairpersons and Health Workers to work together at the village level in a collective effort to protect our villages from the deadly virus.

Representing the Government were Dr Natalia Beer of the Ministry of Health, supported by Dr Franelda Gutierrez, Southern Regional Health Director, and personnel from the Punta Gorda and San Antonio health clinics, who provided information to the leaders on the Government of Belize’s vaccination drive and answered questions from the leaders related to the vaccination; the Police Department and Belize Defence Force to discuss rules and regulations related to the containment of COVID-19 and Minister of Rural Transformation and Labour and Local Government, Toledo West representative Oscar Requeña.

Minister Requeña reminded the leaders of the essential role they play at the village level in preventing the spread of the virus and said they must work together to ensure it does not spread further.
