By Benjamin Flowers: The Government of France has announced that all health care workers must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by September or risk not being paid, reports the BBC.
President Emmanuel Macron made the announcement on Monday, noting that the new mandatory requirement applies to doctors, nurses, office staff volunteers, and all others who come in contact with populations vulnerable to COVID-19. This will apply to those working in hospitals, clinics, and care homes, regardless of their role.
“I am aware of what I am asking of you, and I know that you are ready for this commitment, this is part, in a way, of your sense of duty,” Macron said during a television address on Monday.
Marcon also announced that as of August, there will be a wider rollout of health passes, that either show proof of vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test, will be required for entry to places like movie theaters, bars, shops, festivals, hospitals, and even to take long-distance train rides. These passes are already in use at nightclubs, which opened in France for the first time last weekend since pandemic lockdowns.
As another measure to “encourage” people to get vaccinated, the French government will also start charging for COVId-19 tests which are currently being administered free of cost.
The BBC notes that, following the president’s announcement, the website used for people to make their vaccination appointments crashed because of the influx of people trying to get vaccinated.
