By Aaron Humes: The Christian Workers’ Union (CWU) and Port of Belize Limited management are to meet next Wednesday, July 21 at 2 p.m. to start the process toward negotiation on critical issues.
This follows a CWU discussion this morning with Labour Commissioner Ann-Marie Thompson, which has been mediating between the two.
According to Evan “Mose” Hyde, the Commissioner has been active in getting the two sides together, though next Wednesday’s meeting will be virtual and it is not even the start of a negotiation.
But it is a start, Hyde told us: “We are willing to meet with PBL right now, this afternoon, midnight, tomorrow morning, tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, Sunday, Monday…we want to meet. But I think she still wanted us to come in and we expressed the great urgency and we believe its important to act with reflection of that great urgency.”
The guarantee of a meeting comes from the Labour Commissioner, who met with PBL Wednesday afternoon and got them to commit to the date, which CWU has now accepted.
The CWU delegation included both stevedores and staff alongside Hyde and General Secretary Floyd Neal.
