By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa, Home Affairs Chief Executive Officer Kevin Arthurs, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams and other Ministry officials are on a countrywide tour of police facilities.
After visiting Corozal and Orange Walk on Tuesday, the Musa-led team visited Caye Caulker and San Pedro on Wednesday.
Minister Musa said the main reason for the tour is to familiarize himself with the police officers, the police stations, to find out what the general situation is, what challenges the Police Department is faced with and what should be the focus in the crime fighting strategy.
Musa said at Caye Caulker there are serious issues with infrastructure particularly the police living quarters.
Musa also expressed concerned about the health of police officers noting that he has attended seven cops funerals this year. He said he firmly believes police officers should have medical insurance. He said frontline officers face many challenges so it’s critical they have something as basic as insurance.
Commissioner of Police Chester Williams said that police moral is at all-time high and that it could be achieved by looking out for personnel welfare. He said that he is grateful to have a minister who is hands on and wants to ensure the officers get the necessary equipment to perform at optimal level. Williams said he is aware that these are difficult times and that it is imperative that police officers feel comfortable and safe while performing their very difficult tasks.
Caye Caulker has been relatively free of major crime for over a year and Village Chairlady Seleny Villanueva Pott said that it’s commendable that the Minister Musa and Commissioner Williams are visiting to find out for themselves what the situation is and what is needed for improvement.
