By BBN Staff: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says that the officer responsible for the shooting death of a minor in Placencia is now in police custody awaiting a decision from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Williams said that the incident is unfortunate because the 14-year-old victim did not have any criminal dealings and is not known to police. He added that he has since been in contact with the minor’s family, as he knows the mother of the deceased well, to offer his condolences. He noted that he has directed the Professional Standards Branch to conduct both a criminal and internal investigation into the issue.
Williams explained that around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a security guard at a resort called police to make a report of suspicious people in the area.
Police arrived on the scene and the group dispersed, at which point one officer fired a single shot which caught the minor in his back, ultimately killing him.
Police have taken statements from the security guard, members of the group that were running, and other witnesses, in an ongoing investigation.
