By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “We will be uniting as Belizeans, and we’ll focus on trying to get wins for the Flag. All our efforts together will be better than three of our individual efforts,” said 501 Valvoline’s Oscar Quiroz about his participation in the Intelligentsia Cup in the Chicago from July 16-25.

The Intelligentsia Cup is a ten-day cycling event in and around Chicago with one day’s rest.

Oscar is going to be riding in the Category 2 races along with Byron Pope of the Westrac Cycling team and Giovanni Lovell of the G-Flow Cycling Team. Oscar and Pope traveled to Chicago on Wednesday. Lovell left Belize earlier.

Oscar said the three registered individually under their Belize teams, but they will be riding in cooperation with each other.

“I think because of the competitiveness and considering this one of the bigger events, the goal is to try to achieve the best result possible,”

“This won’t be my first time in the United States and I’m going up another category which is the Cat 2. I believe that I could do fairly well,” he added.

“I’m confident. I’ve been preparing after the Road Championship, racing, and training,” said Oscar before leaving San Ignacio/Santa Elena on Thursday morning. “So, it’s just a continuous process at this point. I just kind of fine-tuned, doing more specific training towards criterium racing. It’s now just to execute and hope for the best.”

Oscar said the trip to the Intelligentsia Cup is sponsored by Glenn Flowers.

“He wanted to give several Belizeans the opportunity to trace at this event and to start something somewhat of a transition to getting some of our athletes, the more determined, the more disciplined athletes to get a chance to go out there and who knows,” said Oscar.

“We might get additional opportunities; maybe through big teams out there, we get recognized. You never know where it could go. It might not be now but could be in the future for sure,” said Oscar hoping to extend his cycling career beyond Belize.
