Belize Progressive Party expresses condolences to family of Laddie Gillett, calls Minister of Police to weed out rogue and corrupt officers

Posted: Friday, July 16, 2021. 3:03 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Progressive Party (BOO) expressed “heartfelt sympathies” to the family of Laddie Gillett who died on Wednesday night allegedly killed by a policeman’s bullet.

“Laddie Gillet was a young Belizean with a bright future, doing what young people do, hang out with friends on the beach in the beautiful community of Placencia when he was shot in the back by a police officer and killed,” said a statement by the BPP.

“The BPP is outraged and joins the nation to demand justice for Laddie Gillett and his friend, whom another police officer allegedly assaulted. This must NEVER happen again,” added the BPP statement.

The BPP then called on the Commissioner of Police and the Director of Public Prosecutions “to do all necessary to bring to justice the perpetrator of this heinous act.”

The BPP demands that the Minister of Police “do what is expected of him, which is to immediately conduct a police audit and weed out all those rogue and corrupt officers who abuse their role and use it as a license to do wrong and in this case, kill innocent citizens.”

The BPP said it is referring to police officers who did not take the police exams and who entered the police force because of political strings adding that these “rogue individuals have no place in the police force; they must be removed immediately.”
