Father of Laddie Gillett unsatisfied with manslaughter charge

Posted: Friday, July 16, 2021. 12:05 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Emil Bradley, the father of Laddie Gillett, the 14-year-old who was shot dead by Police Corporal Kareem Martinez, says he is not satisfied with the Director of Public Prosecution’s decision to charge for manslaughter.

Bradley stood outside of the Belmopan Magistrate’s Court this morning, expressing his frustration at the charge, saying that the family is being denied justice.

“They could have charged for murder and let the judge decide what he deserved. It’s not the first time someone would be charged for murder and get manslaughter,” Bradley said.

He went on to say that his family wants an apology from Martinez and hopes that he will own up to his wrongdoing, but finds it unlikely that he will.

“The mere fact you have an attorney, means you think your action is right,” Bradley added.

Martinez, who is being represented by attorney Hurl Hamilton, is being arraigned.

This is a developing story.
