By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Concerned citizens of Placencia Village said a vigil will be held for Laddie Gillett at eight pm on Sunday, July 1 in front of Placencia Police Station.
“All are welcome and the press is invited to participate and witness this community gathering to grieve the murder of Laddie Gillet and demand peaceful conflict resolution from our police,” said a press release issued on Friday by Concerned citizens of Placencia Village.
“We the people of Placencia Village are horrified by the violence perpetrated in our own community,” said the release.
“Laddie Gillett, our fellow Belizean, was enjoying a summer vacation in our beautiful community when he was shot in the back by a police officer and killed.
“We demand justice for Laddie Gillett and for his friend who was reportedly assaulted by another police officer,” the press release stated.
The Concerned citizens of Placencia said that for such a tragic death “NEVER happens again, we demand that police countrywide be given intensive training on peaceful conflict resolution and diversity training including addressing racial and gender-based profiling in police work.”
