By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Splash’s Ana López-Camp of Esperanza won the 10K Benque Run in 45 minutes and 39.3 seconds getting to the finish all alone at the Centennial Park in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Saturday morning.
Normally Benque would be having its July Fiesta but with the exception of the religious celebration, activities were toned down for the second year in a row due to the pandemic, so this morning’s race came as welcome activity in Belize’s westernmost town.
López-Camp was 6th overall as the women ran along with the men.
Organized by Total Time, the 10K Benque Run started at 5:30 am at the Centennial Park, went to the Belize-Guatemala border, then to San Jose Succotz, and back to finish at the Centennial Park.
Evelyn Azueta of Belmopan ran in second in 54:00.9.
Manza’s Asinett Manzanero of Benque took 3rd in 1 hour, 3 minutes, and 1 second. Asinett was also the first runner in the 40+ category.
Manza’s Azimel Manzanero followed in 4th in 1:05:57.9. Azimel was first in the 24 and under category.
Kyren Tillett of San Ignacio finished 5th in 1:09:36.3.
M&M Engineering’s Elicia Castillo of Santa Elena was 6th in 1:15:58.3.
The seventh place belonged to Audrey O’Brien of Santa Elena in 1:27:32.9.
