Johnny Briceno turns 61 as Prime Minister

By Aaron Humes:  The Number One is 61 today.

Prime Minister John Briceno (born Juan Antonio in Orange Walk Town) celebrates his first birthday as Prime Minister of Belize, though in less than celebratory circumstances.

First elected to the House of Representatives in 1993 from Orange Walk Central where he succeeded father Eligio “Joe” Briceno, his rise through the People’s United Party was relatively swift: town councilor and party co-chairman in 1994, deputy party leader by 1996, deputy prime minister to Said Musa in 1998.

The G-7 setback briefly stalled his political career, but by 2008 after the party’s defeat in general elections, he was party leader. He stepped aside in 2011 then returned after a third straight General elections defeat in 2016, in time to become the first Prime Minister not born in the Old Capital.

He has made his name in business as well, as co-founder of Centaur Communications and investor in Speednet Communications, the parent company of SMART.

The father of three is married to Special Envoy Rossana Briceno and is busy implementing the party’s #planbelize amid a pandemic and other setbacks.

So today, take some time for yourself P.M. and enjoy your special day!
