Community activists calls for peaceful demonstration demanding justice for Laddie Gillett

Posted: Sunday, July 18, 2021. 4:37 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Community Activist Moses Sulph is calling for a peaceful demonstration in Belize City tonight, as a bid to demand justice for 14-year-old Laddie Gillett, who was shot and killed by police last Wednesday.

The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will begin at the Pound Yard Bridge, move up Orange Street and onto Albert Street, ending at Battlefield Park.

Sulph says that the event is being held to demand that the Director of Public Prosecutions upgrade the charge given to Kareem Martinez, the officer who shot Gillett, be upgraded from manslaughter to murder.

“We are not marching against the police, we are marching for justice for a young man we believe was murdered,” Sulph stressed.

He noted that as COVID-19 regulations are still in place, participants are asked to wear their masks and respect the protocols during the event.
