By Benjamin Flowers: The Public Service Union (PSU) has joined the growing number of organizations calling for justice for Laddie Gillett, the 14-year-old who was shot dead by police last week.
Following Gillett’s untimely death on the night of Wednesday, July 14, the PSU issued a statement, offering condolences to Gillett’s family and condemning the situation which caused his senseless death; stressing that the situation was “unjustified” and the officer involved was “careless.”
“The fact that the officer was charged with manslaughter is another grave injustice to the Belizean people, and denial of justice to his loved ones and the citizens of Belize. Too long have we seen our fellow citizens killed and justice denied with a simple slap on the wrist of perpetrators of both minor and major crimes,” the PSU said.
In light of the manslaughter charge, the PSU is recommending a special investigation into the situation and called on the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to review the facts of the case in its entirety to ensure that justice is served.
“We join the citizens of Belize in demanding Justice for Laddie,” the PSU concluded.
