By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) is the latest organization to register its outrage at the fatal shooting of 14-year-old Laddie Gillett.
The BNTU issued a statement today, stressing that Gillett, a student of Belize Christian Academy (BCA), was of exemplary character and did not deserve to be shot to the chest by an officer whose sworn duty is to protect and serve members of the public.
“At this time, however, there are more questions than answers surrounding what occurred in this incident, but we must, in no uncertain terms, call on our Police Department to ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted so that justice is served in its full measure,” the BNTU said.
The union also called on the Government of Belize to make serious investments in better training for police officers. The union also extended its condolences to Gillett’s family and friends as well as his teachers and classmates at BCA.
