Shaun Gill, Samantha Dirks to be Belize’s Flag Bearers at the Olympics Opening Ceremony

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Samantha Dirks and Shaun Gill are set to be Belize’s Flag Bearers at the Olympics Opening Ceremony on Friday, July 23.

Belize will be represented in Athletics by Dirks and Gill, and in Canoeing by Amado Cruz.

Both Gill and Dirks are already in Tokyo along with Deon Sutherland, President of the Belize Athletics Association, who traveled as their coach.

Chief of Mission Herman Pastor left Belize on Monday and is already in Tokyo.

Amado Cruz leaves Spain where he has been training on Wednesday, July 21, and arrives just in time for the opening on Friday.

The five of them will be participating in the Opening Ceremony on Friday at 8:30 pm (5:30 am Belize Time) with Gill and Dirks being the Flag Bearers since the International Olympic Committee required both a man and a woman to bear the national flags.

Three more persons will make the Belize Delegation.

The Belize National Olympic Committee Secretary General Allan Sharp will leave on Thursday, July 22 and arrives on Saturday, July 24.

The President of the Belize Canoe Association Elvin Penner leaves on Sunday, July 25, and arrives on Tuesday, July 27.

Amado Cruz’s coach Foad Buchta Mohamed leaves Spain on July 25 and arrives on July 27 as well.
