By Aaron Humes: Once area representative for Belmopan, John Saldivar wants to be the future representative for Belmopan.
While he has little hope of convincing United Democratic Party boss Patrick Faber, who has publicly made clear that the party Constitution provides that representatives who have lost three General elections, consecutive or no, are not eligible except with the party’s special dispensation, Saldivar has announced on social media a comeback event seeking endorsement for another run in office.
Commenting on the UDP Belmopan page which said inter alia that residents of Belmopan regretted voting for incumbent Oscar Mira and wanted Saldivar back, the former Minister declared, “It’s official. My name is John Saldivar and I am offering to serve you again!!! Let’s get back to progress. Redemption Time!!!”
Not ironically, the event is being held at the University of Belize Gymnasium on August 1, being celebrated this year as Emancipation Day (the holiday is being given on Monday, August 2).
After two bruising battles to be party leader – Saldivar won the February election only to be forced to step down amid the Lev Dermen revelations in Salt lake city, Utah at a federal trial, Faber won the rematch in July and more recently survived an attempt at recall by party members – the two are bitter enemies and Faber is not likely invited, if he was inclined to go.
But where does this lead with a party National Convention due next year but no elections till 2024? It is likely to tell us the first words of the coming narrative to the party’s struggle to return to power – and Saldivar’s though he claims not to want to be party leader.
