By Benjamin Flowers: The Public Service Union (PSU) confirmed today that it has written to Governor General H.E. Froyla Tzalam, requesting that she forego the salary adjustment recently approved by the Government of Belize as a sign of solidarity with Belize’s economic recovery.
PSU President, speaking to the media via Zoom conference this morning, said that the union fully supports a salary increase as well as health insurance for the Governor General, but now is not the time.
“Our intent, of course, when we wrote to her was to remind Her Excellency that she is the head of state and that she must lead by example,” Flowers said.
Flowers says that the union expects that the Governor General will defer her salary increase for the next three years in solidarity with the country’s economic recovery, but also with those public officers and teachers who have been subject to a 10 percent salary reduction and three-year increment freeze.
“Of course it is her choice, but it will speak also of her legacy, and her decision to abandon the recovery efforts of this country will form part of her legacy and will be forever etched in the history books. So we believe she will do the right thing,” Flowers said.
He notes that the letter was sent on July 15, but Her Excellency has not yet responded.
