Someone pulled the plug on the Olympics broadcasts on Friday morning

Posted: Friday, July 23, 2021. 10:50 am CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: If you were watching the Olympics and the channel suddenly disappeared, stop searching. All live broadcasts have been pulled by cable operators because they lack the rights to televise the Games.

According to a press release by the Belize Cable TV Operators Association (BCTVOA), because of an impasse with Concord Media Group, who acquired exclusive rights from the International Media Content Limited, the BCTVOA cannot carry the Olympics.

The BCTVOA said that as the negotiation representative for cable rights on behalf of cable operators, the Association has engaged SportMax to gain rights for the 2020 Olympics broadcast but that the costs now quoted by SportsMax for cable rights are way beyond their possibilities.

For previous Olympics Games, local broadcasters Channel 5 and Channel 7 have been able to obtain the rights working alongside with the BCTVOA to defray the costs. The local channels previously also acquired rights through the Caribbean Broadcasting Union.

If the BCTVOA cannot find a way, it means we won’t be able to see any of the live broadcasts through any of the cable companies. We’ll have to do with summarized replays in the news carried by the different stations both locally and internationally.

Samantha Dirks and Shaun Gill and Amado Cruz are representing Belize at the Olympics which got underway this morning. Dirks and Gill are competing in Athletics and Cruz in Canoeing.

The XXXII Olympiad runs from July 23-August 8, 2021.
