By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Mexico and invited guests Qatar qualified to the semifinals of the Concacaf Gold Cup on Saturday at the State Farm Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona.
What’s normally a heated affair was easy sailing for perennial favorites Mexico as they dispatched Honduras 3-0 to secure their ticket to the semifinals quite comfortably.
A superb twelve-minute run in the first half was all the Mexicans needed to send Honduras home. Argentine-born Rogelio Funés Mori hit Mexico’s first goal off a header in the 26th minute. Five minutes later in the 31st, Jonathan dos Santos converted Mexico’s second goal. Orbelín Pineda close the deal with another header in the 38th.
For their part, invited guests Qatar edged El Salvador 3-2 in a vibrant match on their way to the semifinals.
Like Mexico, Qatar jumped El Salvador 3-0 on goals by Al Moez Ali in the 2nd and 55th minutes (the second on a penalty kick goal) and another by Abdelaziz Hatim in the 8th.
But unlike, Honduras, the Salvadorans rallied back on two goals by Joaquín Rivas in the 63rd and 66th, but unfortunately for them, that’s all they could muster despite their forward push against Qatar.
The other two quarterfinal matches are scheduled for Sunday at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Costa Rica match up against Canada at 5 pm while the United States host Jamaica at 7:30 pm.
The semifinals will play on Wednesday and Thursday of next week in Texas.
