By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Tyrell Reyes, one of the Fisheries Department’s marine reserve managers is participating in a Trainer of Trainers course for First Responders during this week from Monday, July 26 to Friday, July 30, 2021, said the Fisheries Department.
After the training, Reyes will be part of a National Post-storm brigade that will carry out coral restoration after a storm. Reyes is taking the trainers course along with other regional professionals from Belize, Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras.
The Belize Fisheries Department and its partners Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Turneffe Atoll Marine Reserve are working in tandem with The Nature Conservancy in holding this training through funding from MARFund.
This First Responders trainers’ course is the second in a series of regional trainings for countries in the Mesoamerican reef system.
“The objective of the training is to have a team of first responders to implement the Early Warning and Rapid Response Protocol, which is a guide on how to respond before, during and after a hurricane to mitigate the impacts to coral reefs in an organized manner,” said the Fisheries Department.
