By BBN Staff: Belize City resident James Albert Copious, who is facing a drug trafficking charge with respect to 1.3 grams of crack cocaine, was granted bail today in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.
Copius pleaded guilty, explaining to the court that he had no one to bail him, so he felt he had to. Senior Magistrate, Tricia Pitts-Anderson, told him that she could not accept a guilty plea on those grounds and that he had to agree with the facts read to him. He initially pleaded guilty, but then opted to change his plea, stressing that police found the drugs on the ground far from him.
The Senior Magistrate entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on his behalf and granted him bail in the sum of $1,500, which he was able to meet. He is due back in court on September 28.
Police say a mobile patrol on East Collet Canal drove past Slip and Slide Barbershop when they noticed two men, one of whom was throwing away a plastic bag at the sight of the patrol vehicle. The officers took the men to the area where the bag was thrown and found that it contained crack cocaine.
