By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s 400m runner Samantha Dirks trained at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo on Wednesday.
Belize’s Chief of Mission Herman Pastor Jr. said that Dirks was training with her university teammates from other countries.
Dirks’ only participation at the Olympics will be in the 400m event. She will compete in the 400m (Heat 1) on Monday, August 2 at 6:45 pm (Tuesday, August 3, 9:45 am, Japan).
28-year-old Dirks was born on December 18, 1992.
Her personal best in the 400m is 53.19 seconds which she recorded in 2015. Her best performance this year was 54.20 at the Mexican National Championships in Querétaro, Mexico, on June 11.
In her last competition, the Stars and Stripes Classic in Marietta, Georgia, she clocked 55.52 on July 9. That was the same time that won her bronze at the Central American Championship in San Jose, Costa Rica, on June 27. In Costa Rica, Dirks won the 200m in 23.80.
Belize’s other athlete at the Olympics is Shaun Gill, who will run the 100 m (Heat 1) on Saturday, July 31 at 4:45 am (7:45 pm Japan time).
They are accompanied by the Belize Athletics Association president Deon Sutherland.
