By Benjamin Flowers: COVID-19 cases are on the rise in Belize, with 45 new cases confirmed today, prompting the Ministry of Education to renew its plea for teachers to get vaccinated.
Minister of Education, Francis Fonseca, sounded the call again today, noting that the Government of Belize will be liaising with managing authorities to ensure that teachers who are not vaccinated are submitting the required negative PCR test every two weeks under the new regulations. He went on to say that he wishes all teachers to realize the importance of getting vaccinated from COVID-19 so it does not come to that.
“The message we want to send is a very clear one. When our teachers are vaccinated everyone is safer. They are safer, their fellow teachers are safer, their students are safer, their students’ families,” Fonseca said. “We want to say in a very clear and resounding way, please let’s get vaccinated.”
He noted that up to 70 percent of Belize’s teachers have been vaccinated, which is a positive step as the ministry moves towards the target of at least 80 percent of teachers vaccinated. The Belize National Teachers Union is reportedly preparing to engage teachers on the way forward with regard to those who have not been vaccinated.
