By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Board of Commissioners of the National Women’s Commission (NWC) on Wednesday participated in a validation session to review Belize’s gender-based violence response, said the National Women’s Commission in a press release.
The Board of Commissioners reviewed the outcomes and outputs “recommended in this first phase of the validation and consultation process of the draft Revised Gender Policy and draft revised National Gender-based Violence Action Plan” at Charter House in Belize City.
The NWC said that with “funding from the Spotlight Initiative, it continues strengthening Belize’s ongoing gender-based violence response.”
Spotlight Initiative is an organization that is “committed to ending all harmful practices against women and girls.”
The NWC said that this year, the Secretariat, with support from a consultant, conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the National Gender Policy 2013 and the National Gender-based Violence (NGBV) Action Plan 2017 – 2020.
“Findings of the evaluation will not only inform and support efforts aiming at stronger policy frameworks that responds to family violence, but also use its findings develop an improved gender policy with strong institutional arrangements for its delivery and a revised NGBV Action Plan,” said the NWC.
The National Women’s Commission said that “as a coordinating mechanism of the national gender and gender-based violence response is responsible for leading the process and ensuring that stakeholders across governmental and non-governmental sectors are included in this first phase using working groups, focus groups, surveys, and key individual interviews”.
The NWC said the participants in the validation session were: President – Thea Garcia Ramirez, Vice President – Marissa Cervantes Martin, Secretary – Dorla Vaughan, and other Commissioners, Wendy Williams, Dr. Lesly Perez, Major Jonathan Kellman, Anthony Sabal, Aurelia Cal, and Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry representative – CEO Kim Aikman.
The session was led by the Executive Director Cynthia Williams and Program Officer Eleanor Murillo.
Validation and consultation sessions with Government and non-government Stakeholders will also be held.
